| Editorial: Wives more and more have the earning power |
|
It's no secret that the notion of the stereotypical American family -- breadwinner father; mother, if she works outside the home at all, in a lesser-paid job -- is changing fast. And now comes further proof. For the first time in our history, there is an age group - Americans 30 to 44 - where more women have college degrees than men, according to a report by the Pew Research Center. Not only are wives better educated than their husbands, increasingly they are better paid, too. In 1970, only 4 percent of husbands had wives who earned more than they did. In 2007, it was 22 percent. And that gap is still closing. Women with full-time jobs still make only 77.9 percent of what men earn, up from 52 percent in 1970. But in that same period women's earnings grew 44 percent, compared with 6 percent for men. |
